The Dormition and Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Circa 1370
Fresco
Apse of the Duomo, Orvieto, Italy

In the lower register Christ receives the soul of his mother. The upper register shows the next step: he reunites her soul and body and takes her bodily into Heaven. Mary's corporeality in the upper image is emphasized by her substantial size and the realistic modeling of her garment.
